Under the Skylights

Under the Skylights captures the particular anguish of a young idealist newly arrived in the city that promises everything and delivers mostly disappointment. Abner Joyce, a earnest writer from humble roots, has just published his first book, a socially conscious meditation on rural life called 'This Weary World', and finds himself thrust into the glittering, hollow world of urban intellectual society. He encounters Mrs. Palmer Pence, Leverett Whyland, and a cast of characters who represent everything he claims to disdain yet cannot stop watching. Fuller's genius lies in neither endorsing Abner's earnestness nor dismissing it; instead, he traces the painful process of a sensitive man learning to navigate a world that rewards performance over conviction. The novel operates as both a sharp social satire of Gilded Age Chicago and a quietly devastating portrait of an artist trying to remain whole in an environment designed to commodify everything, including himself. It is a book for anyone who has ever felt like a fraud at their own dinner table, or wondered whether keeping one's principles is nobility or just another form of self-pity.
