Tommy and Grizel

J.M. Barrie, the magician behind Peter Pan, crafted this novel as the shadow-side companion to Sentimental Tommy. It matters because it strips away the whimsy to show what happens when Neverland is just a story you once believed. Tommy Sandys arrives in London with his sister Elspeth, a serious and somewhat naive young man carrying his small box and bigger dreams. He falls under the wing of O.P. Pym, a legendary author so in demand that his publishers hide his boots to keep him from wandering off before finishing his work. But the real mystery is Grizel, a woman from Tommy's past whose presence haunts his emotional landscape. Their relationship becomes a tumultuous dance of love, misunderstanding, and heartbreak that forces Tommy to confront who he actually is versus who he wants to be. Barrie uses Pym's satirical portrait of literary fame to ask hard questions about authenticity and artistry. This is Barrie at his most revealing: a fairy tale author writing about the painful cost of growing up. It endures because anyone who has ever loved without being loved back will recognize themselves in these pages.
