Theory of the Leisure Class
Published in 1898, 'Theory of the Leisure Class' by Thorstein Veblen critiques consumerism and economic behavior. Veblen, a Norwegian-American economist, argues that economic life is influenced more by social customs from prehistoric times than by utility. This work is notable for being one of the first detailed analyses of consumer culture and its implications on society.
