The Village by the River

The Village by the River, written in the late 19th century by H. Louisa Bedford, is a novel set in the fictional village of Rudham. The story unfolds after the death of the squire, Mr. Lessing, focusing on the dynamics among villagers as they navigate the implications of new ownership when Paul Lessing inherits the estate. The narrative explores themes of social change, community relationships, and the tension between traditional values and emerging ideas, particularly as Paul, who has socialist leanings, returns to a village steeped in customs and expectations.
