The Settlers in Canada

Frederick Marryat, the swashbuckling naval captain who gave us Children of the New Forest, turns his hand to emigration in this gripping tale of one family's leap into the unknown. When surgeon Mr. Campbell inherits sudden wealth, he makes the radical decision to abandon England's comfortable shores for the untamed wilderness of Upper Canada circa 1790. What follows is a boy-own adventure of log cabins and maple sugaring, of encounters with bears and the daily battle to transform wilderness into home. Marryat writes with the authority of a man who knew remote corners of the earth, rendering the Canadian landscape with an explorer's eye for detail and danger. The novel pulses with the energy of colonial optimism: these are people building civilization with their hands, and the stakes could not be higher. Yet the book is very much of its era, containing colonial perspectives and racist depictions of Indigenous peoples that modern readers must approach with critical awareness.
