The Poems of Oliver Goldsmith

Oliver Goldsmith's poetry pulses with a particular kind of longing - for village greens that fell silent, for neighbors who once knew each other's names, for a world where luxury had not yet devoured community. This collection gathers his finest work, including the devastating 'The Deserted Village,' which traces the death of a once-thriving rural community through the march of enclosures and commercialism. Goldsmith writes with deceptive simplicity: his lines glide and sing, but beneath their gentle surface lies sharp critique of what progress costs the human soul. He captures childhood memories with startling intimacy, conjuring the Specific warmth of specific afternoons, the particular sorrow of leaving home. These are poems for anyone who has ever felt the world they knew slipping away, rendered in verse so musical it almost hurts to read aloud.
