The Old Card

Eliphalet Cardomay has spent a lifetime perfecting his craft, learning his lines in dressing rooms that still smell of greasepaint and gaslight. But when he arrives in a provincial town, preparing for a London production that might be his last great chance, he finds a world that no longer quite knows what to do with him. The theatrical landscape has shifted beneath his feet: audiences now crave something raw and immediate, not the dignified flourishes of the old school. Through encounters with his dresser, with townsfolk who remember his better days, and with his own mounting anxieties, Pertwee weaves a portrait that is both painfully funny and genuinely moving, an actor confronting the terrifying possibility that his art has become a relic. The novel captures something profound about identity when it's wrapped entirely in work, about the comedy and tragedy of a man who is the sum of his performances yet cannot perform his way out of changing times.
