Our Wonderful Selves

A poignant early portrait of the artist as a young boy, set in a suburban English household where sensitivity is treated as a weakness. Wynne Rendall is born into a world that prizes conformity above all else his father is a pillar of conventional respectability, his mother a figure of emotional distance who offers no warmth to nurture his vivid curiosity. Young Wynne possesses an artist's eye for the world around him, but in his parents' house, such things are not spoken of, let alone encouraged. The tension crackles on every page as a small boy tries to understand why his inner life is met with disapproval, why his questions are treated as inconveniences, and why the thing that makes him most alive is exactly what his family wishes he would outgrow. This novel captures something universal: the wound of being born with a creative soul in a household that cannot recognize it, and the quiet violence of growing up unseen.
