The Lonely Plough

Lancelot Lancaster has spent his youth tending to his family's estate, but something has hollowed him out. At an age when men expect to feel alive, he feels only a strange weariness, a disconnection from the land he manages and the people he serves. As spring arrives at Crake Hall, fresh anxieties emerge. Wolf Whinnerah's son Lup is preparing to leave for Canada, forcing the old farmer to confront the end of his line and the slow death of the family farm. Meanwhile, Lup's heart belongs to Francey Dockeray, the daughter of a neighboring tenant, yet the social and economic pressures of rural England conspire against them. As Lancelot navigates the competing demands of duty and desire, he begins to understand that his own loneliness mirrors the broader exile of a way of life fading into history. This is a novel about what it means to remain when everything urges departure, about inherited obligation and the quiet tragedies that unfold in the shadow of changing times.
