The Splendid Fairing

In the bucolic yet unforgiving landscape of early 20th-century rural England, Simon and Sarah Thornthwaite, an aging couple, face the stark reality of losing their farm, Sarah's encroaching blindness, and a rapidly dwindling future. Forced to relocate to the nearby town of Witham, their arrival stirs up a hornet's nest of long-held rumors and familial resentments, particularly concerning Simon's estranged, more prosperous brother, Will, and his wife, Eliza. Through a series of poignant introspections, Simon and Sarah's present struggles are juxtaposed with nostalgic echoes of their youth, revealing the intricate web of relationships and decisions that have shaped their lives and the lives of those around them. The Splendid Fairing is a masterful character study, delving into the quiet dignity and profound vulnerabilities of aging, the enduring ache of loneliness, and the corrosive power of family rivalries. Holme's prose is a gentle but firm hand, guiding us through the emotional landscape of regret, unfulfilled dreams, and the enduring echoes of youthful romance – whether it blossomed into lifelong companionship or festered into bitter envy. This novel offers a tender, unflinching look at the human cost of time's passage and the intricate tapestry of memory and consequence.
