American Literature, Novels

1919. Dr. Kenneth Harper, a young Black physician and World War I veteran, returns to Central City, Georgia, with a medical degree and a dangerous hope: that the war to make the world safe for democracy might have changed something back home. He opens his clinic with careful optimism, ready to serve his community and prove that a Black man can build something lasting in the Jim Crow South. He is wrong. The white residents who once knew him as a boy now see only a threat. The friendly faces of his childhood reveal the depths of their prejudice. As Harper becomes increasingly aware of how deeply his community is enslaved, he helps local sharecroppers organize a cooperative society, fighting for the economic freedom traditionally reserved for white landowners. The Klan rallies. What follows is a violent and vengeful battle that will force Harper to choose: retreat into quiet medicine, or stand and fight. Walter White, a lifelong champion of civil rights, writes with controlled fury, refusing to look away from racial terror while honoring the fierce dignity of Black resistance. This is a novel about the collision between hope and history, and what it costs to refuse the world as it is.
