The Contrast

Royall Tyler

1787

American Literature, Humour, Plays/Films/Dramas

In 1787, Royall Tyler asked a question that would echo through American culture: what happens when the New World's plain dealing meets the Old World's practiced artifice? The answer was The Contrast, the first American play ever staged by a professional acting company, and a comedy that still bites. Colonel Manly, a straightforward American soldier, arrives in New York society and finds himself contrasted sharply against Mr. Dimple, a fashionable London import whose charm masks a hollow heart. Around them swirls witty banter between Charlotte and Letitia, whose discussions of dress, romance, and propriety skewer Americans desperate to seem worldly. Tyler skewers both the snobbery of British-influenced society and the absurd pretense of importing European manners to American soil. It's a play about becoming American while figuring out what that means, told with the comic precision of a writer who clearly loved Sheridan's plays but wanted to write something that could only exist in the new republic. The Contrast endures not as a museum piece but as proof that American theater was grappling with identity, class, and authenticity from its very first professional performance.
