The Complete Works of Josh Billings

Before David Sedaris, before Garrison Keillor, there was Josh Billings, the 19th-century American humorist who proved that wisdom and misspelling could go hand in hand. This complete collection gathers his finest essays, where deliberately wrong grammar becomes a vehicle for something surprisingly right. Billings turns his eye toward marriage, money, neighbors, and the eternal human comedy of trying to be happy in a world that makes it difficult. His observations land with the kind of quiet accuracy that makes you laugh, then pause, then laugh again. The humor feels distinctly American: homespun, a little rowdy, suspicious of anyone who takes themselves too seriously. Reading Billings is like sitting on a porch with the smartest person in town, listening to them dismantle pretension one malapropism at a time. His satire never stings; it disarms. These essays endure because the things he mocked, our social anxieties, our romantic folly, our endless capacity for self-deception, haven't changed in two centuries. For readers who appreciate humor that sneaks up on you, this is a window into an earlier America's gift for finding truth in jokes.
