Josh Billings, Hiz Sayings

This is mock-serious American humor at its finest. Josh Billings approaches the absurdities of everyday life with a deadpan gravity that makes the ridiculous somehow profound. Written in deliberately phonetic dialect that mocks pretension, "Hiz Sayings" delivers genuine wisdom about human nature under the guise of tongue-in-cheek nonsense. The man who tries to insure his life and faces absurd questions from a bureaucratic agent, who offers playful counsel on mules, love, education, and family, Billings captures something essential about the gap between how we present ourselves and how we actually live. These aphorisms and brief essays blend cynicism with charm, satire with genuine affection for their subjects. If you want to understand 19th-century American humor at its source, before Twain and before modern satire, this is where it began.
