The City Bride (1696): Or, the Merry Cuckold

The City Bride, written by Joseph Harris in 1696, is a comedy that adapts elements from William Rowley and John Webster's earlier play, A Cure for a Cuckold. Set against the backdrop of a wedding celebration, the play explores themes of fidelity and infidelity through the character of Arabella, who navigates complex relationships with Bonvile and Friendly. The narrative is marked by witty dialogue and underlying tensions, particularly when a letter from Clara incites conflict between Friendly and Bonvile, highlighting issues of loyalty and betrayal.
