That Affair Next Door

Long before Agatha Christie refined the rules of detective fiction, Anna Katharine Green was writing them. Published in 1897, That Affair Next Door stands as a landmark of American mystery writing, a locked-room puzzle that helped birth a genre. When a woman's body is discovered beneath a toppled cabinet in an otherwise empty house, the case seems impossible: the owners had been away for days, the doors locked, the residence vacant. Yet forensic evidence reveals she died hours before the cabinet fell. Someone placed her there. Someone with keys, with knowledge, with secrets worth killing for. Detective Ebenezer Gryce must navigate the carefully maintained facades of respectable Victorian society, where affairs happen next door and no one speaks of what they've seen. Green constructs her mystery with meticulous logic, planting clues in plain sight while misdirection blooms in the margins. The result is a book that treats readers as intellectual equals, inviting them to beat the detective to the solution. For anyone who believes the golden age of mystery began in the 1920s, this is a bracing reminder that brilliant puzzles were being solved decades earlier.
