Ten Girls from Dickens

This 1902 collection serves as a portal for young readers into the rich world of Dickens, offering character studies of ten girls drawn from his novels. Kate Dickinson Sweetser, writing for an era that prized both literary education and accessible storytelling, frames figures like Little Nell, Florence Dombey, and the Marchioness not as mere literary creations but as companions in girlhood. The approach is reverent but not stuffy: each sketch allows these characters to breathe outside their original narratives, revealing the courage, vulnerability, and quiet resilience that made them endure in the popular imagination. The Marchioness opens the collection as an overworked servant girl from The Old Curiosity Shop, her smallness and diligence setting the emotional tone for what follows. This is nostalgia with purpose Sweetser believed Dickens' female characters deserved a dedicated introduction for young readers, particularly girls, who might find in them both mirror and aspiration.
