Ten Boys from History

What happens when children believe they can change the world? This early 20th-century collection answers with ten true stories of boys who did exactly that. Sweetser gathers figures across centuries and continents: a shepherd who rallied thousands of young pilgrims during the Children's Crusade, a young messenger who braved enemy lines, a cabin boy who became a naval hero. Each narrative pulses with the electricity of youth meeting history head-on. The book captures something modern children's literature often forgets: the radical possibility that young people are not just future citizens but present actors in the great events of their time. These are not watered-down biographies but vivid accounts that neither sentimentalize childhood nor diminish what these boys achieved. The opening story of Stephen, the shepherd boy who convinced thousands of French youth that they could reclaim Jerusalem, remains as haunting as it is inspiring. For readers who have ever been told they are too young to matter, these ten lives offer vivid, defiant counterarguments.
