Tales of Unrest
The five stories in Conrad's first collection thrum with the same restless dread that would later define Heart of Darkness, but here the darkness arrives without the safety of allegory. These are stories of men unraveling at the edges of empire: a trader descending into madness in the African interior, twins born of an ill-fated marriage wandering a French backwater, a Malay warrior haunted by spirits he cannot outrun, a woman's return to a husband who may or may not have died. Conrad strips away the comfortable distance of civilization and reveals what happens when the soul confronts its own emptiness. The Lagoon shimmers with tropical menace; An Outpost of Progress offers a merciless portrait of European degeneracy in the jungle. For readers who prefer their fiction morally uneasy and psychologically raw.
