Tales of the Wilderness

Boris Pilniak's collection arrives at a pivotal moment in Russian letters, capturing the literary landscape in the years after Chekhov's death. These are stories of stillness and transformation, where snow blankets the Russian countryside and characters grapple with art, faith, and the quiet revolutions reshaping their world. The opening tale finds Polunin, a bearded philosopher of sorts, engaged in chess with his guest Arkhipov while winter closes in around them. Elsewhere, women named Alena and Vera Lvovna move through their daily lives against the stark beauty of a frozen landscape, their personal histories and commitments unfolding amid the contemplative silence of rural existence. Pilniak writes with atmospheric precision, letting dialogue drift between discussions of great painters and the nature of asceticism, while deeper currents of past loves and present loyalties surface like creatures glimpsed beneath ice. These are not tales of dramatic action but of inner reckoning, where the wilderness outside mirrors the wilderness within. For readers who cherish the quiet depths of Chekhov or the philosophical weight of early Soviet fiction, Pilniak offers a window into a vanished literary moment when Russia was both ending and beginning.
