Tales for Christmas Eve

Rhoda Broughton's 1872 collection opens with an epistolary gambit that feels effortlessly modern: two friends, Mrs. De Wynt and Mrs. Montresor, trade letters across London as one enthusiastically vouches for a house that seems too good to be true. The price is suspiciously low. The rooms are beautiful. And then the sounds begin. The letter-writing frame allows Broughton to deploy two distinct voices - one breezy and social, the other increasingly unraveled by dread - while maintaining a delicious tension between the mundane details of Victorian domestic life and the intrusion of something impossible. These are not tales of gore but of atmosphere, of the moment when rational explanation fails and the reader is left in the same unsettling space as the characters. Published when ghost stories were the essential Christmas entertainment, this collection captures that specific Victorian pleasure: cosiness shattered by chill. For readers who want their spookiness served with wit and period texture.
