Sunny Boy and His Playmates

The holidays have ended, but for Sunny Boy, the real fun is just beginning. There's a marble lost under the bookcase, lead soldiers to conquer, and best of all, Grandpa Horton is waiting to teach him to skate. Set in the golden haze after Christmas, this early 20th-century tale follows Sunny Boy and his neighbor Nelson Baker as they tumble through the simple, enormous business of being boys: the snowball fights, the wobbly first steps on ice, the small griefs and greater joys of childhood friendship. White captures something precious and now nearly lost: the way a single winter day can feel like an entire kingdom, how a grandparent's hand can make the whole frozen world safe. This is a book for reading aloud, for sharing the warm, ordinary magic of a child discovering that the world is vast and full of people who love him.
