John Muir

Adventure, Biographies, Nature/Gardening/Animals

In 1880, John Muir set out to explore a massive Alaska glacier as a blizzard bore down. He brought no companion except a small, wiry dog belonging to a fellow traveler, a creature Muir himself had dismissed as worthless for such perilous terrain. What followed became the most memorable day of Muir's storied wilderness career. As the storm intensified, man and dog found themselves stranded on the glacier, separated from safety by vast crevasses and howling wind. The only escape led across an ice bridge so precarious it seemed impossible for either of them, let alone a creature weighing mere pounds. Yet Stickeen, the aloof little dog who had seemed merely in the way, rose to meet the moment with quiet heroism. When they finally emerged from the storm, something had shifted: the dog's cold indifference transformed into pure, rapturous devotion. Muir, the father of the national parks who had spent decades confronting nature's sublime terror, found this modest canine had taught him something about courage and connection that no mountain had ever managed. It moved him so deeply that he called it the hardest thing he ever wrote, and saw in his small companion 'the herald of a new gospel.'

“What a psalm the storm was singing, and how fresh the smell of the washed earth and leaves, and how sweet the still small voices of the storm!””
