British Literature, Novels

Stella Maris is a bedridden girl's kingdom. Confined to her room by a spinal condition that has locked her body in stillness, twelve-year-old Stella Blount rules over a small world of sea view and imagination. From her window, she watches the waves that she can never touch, while two young friends John Risca and Walter Herold craft elaborate fantasies to transport her beyond her four walls. But Stella is no passive princess awaiting rescue. She is fierce, funny, and utterly unsentimental, wielding her sharp wit like a sword against the adult world of grievances and quiet desperation that surrounds her. Her uncle Sir Oliver and aunt Lady Blount orbit around this luminous girl, their own marriages and disappointments made bearable by Stella's presence. The novel is set in an English coastal town, where the gray sea becomes both prison wall and window to infinity. What unfolds is tender and sometimes heartbreaking: a story about what it means to inspire love when you yourself cannot leave, to be the bright center of others' lives while your own remains small. Locke's prose has the delicate force of waves shaping stone, and Stella emerges as one of literature's most unforgettable confined heroines, her spirit unquenched by a body that failed her.
