St. Bernard's: The Romance of a Medical Student

London, just after the French Revolution. A young physician named Harrowby Elsworth arrives at St. Bernard's Hospital, fresh from Oxford and burning with the conviction that medicine is a noble calling. What he finds is something else entirely: a world of drunken revelry, cutthroat competition, and the grim necessities of anatomical study in an era before anesthesia, when dissection meant sourcing bodies from the gallows and the "free hospital" ran on a brutal meritocracy of the living and the dead. Berdoe renders the medical school with startling candor, capturing both the genuine camaraderie and the moral compromises that shaped a generation of young men handed scalpels before they were handed wisdom. This is a novel about what happens when idealism meets the unsentimental reality of a physician's training, and whether the flame of purpose can survive the process. For readers who loved The Knick or dreaming of Victorian London through fog and gaslight, this forgotten novel offers an authentic glimpse into medicine's bloody apprenticeship.
