Shorty Mccabe

Meet Shorty McCabe, a former prizefighter turned trainer who speaks in the blunt, breezy vernacular of early 20th-century America. Ford renders his world with perfect pitch: the gymnasium chatter, the hustler's patter, the quiet dignity of a man who'd 'slid into a quiet corner' after quitting the ring and found purpose shaping young fighters into contenders. Shorty's not interested in sentimentality. He's interested in a good story, and he tells his with self-deprecating humor and an eye for character. Enter Leonidas Dodge, a man of questionable credentials who draws Shorty into 'all that foolishness,' and Homer Fales, a reluctant invalid whose misadventures become the backbone of the narrative's comic energy. The result is a novel that feels less like period recreation and more like overhearing a great storyteller hold court in a boarding house, full of warmth, mischief, and the particular loneliness of men who've left their best days in the ring. It's a slice of vanished America rendered with affection and sharp comic timing.
