Shorty Mccabe on the Job
What if a dead man's will forced the living to make amends? That's the delightful premise at the heart of this early 1900s comic novel. Professor Shorty McCabe, a rough-around-the-edges boxing instructor with a heart of gold, gets pulled into an eccentric mission: executing the will of Pyramid Gordon, a wealthy man who spent his life accumulating enemies. Now Gordon wants to make things right from beyond the grave, and he needs someone with fists and moral fiber to do it. Teaming up with the suspiciously charming J. Bayard Steele, McCabe embarks on a串联 of encounters with people Gordon wronged decades ago. Some are ready for reconciliation. Others want nothing to do with the dead man's money. Steele's dubious motives add tension to every stop, but McCabe's stubborn decency keeps the mission afloat. The humor is quintessentially early twentieth-century, full of period slang and period attitudes, but the heart is universal: everyone deserves a chance at redemption, even the man who ruined their lives.
