Shaun O'day of Ireland

In the wind-swept hills of Connemara, a boy named Shaun O'Day wears a red petticoat to guard against the mischievous leprechauns who might spirit him away to the hollow hills. His world is one of stark poverty and a harsh stepmother, yet his heart holds two precious things: his love for Eileen, the girl next door, and a longing for something beyond the gray cabins and struggle of his village. When Shaun sets out to find the leprechauns themselves, he straddles the boundary between the harsh real world and the ancient magic that lingers in every bog and stone of Ireland. His journey takes him across the ocean to America, where he becomes an apprentice to a shoemaker and befriends a young girl named Marjorie. Through hardship and wonder, Shaun must reconcile the old world's magic with the new world's demands, learning who he truly is and what home means when you've left it behind. Brandeis, who traveled Ireland with her camera in 1929, captures a child's-eye view of immigration, belonging, and the stubborn hope that refuses to die.
