
Rip Van Winkle
Rip Van Winkle is a short story by Washington Irving, first published in 1819. It tells the tale of a Dutch-American villager who, after drinking with mysterious strangers in the Catskill Mountains, falls into a deep sleep for twenty years. Upon awakening, he discovers that he has missed the American Revolution and that his village has changed dramatically. The story explores themes of change and identity in post-colonial America.
