Reuben Sachs: A Sketch

Reuben Sachs: A Sketch, published in 1888 by Amy Levy, is a novel that explores the life of a young Jewish man in Victorian London. The story centers on Reuben Sachs as he navigates personal ambitions and familial expectations, particularly in relation to his cousin Judith Quixano. Notable for its candid portrayal of Anglo-Jewish life, the novel critiques societal pressures and identity struggles, standing in contrast to George Eliot's romanticized depictions of Jews. The Broadview edition includes Levy's essay 'The Jew in Fiction' and other contextual materials.
