Römische Elegien, published in 1795 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is a collection of poems inspired by his travels in Italy. Initially titled Erotica Romana, the work reflects Goethe's experiences in Rome, exploring themes of love, beauty, and the city's historical grandeur. The collection includes twenty elegies published in Schiller's Horen and four additional poems withheld due to their controversial content, which were later released in 1914. Goethe's vivid imagery and emotional depth intertwine personal longing with reflections on classical culture, showcasing the transformative power of love against the backdrop of Rome's artistic heritage.
