In 1884 London, a Sunday evening at Max Schurz's improvised salon draws together the city's most committed radicals, refugees, and dissenting intellectuals. French artisans fleeing the Commune, German naturalists and printers, disaffected Radicals escaping their wives' church outings, and hungry young artists all converge on this unlikely temple of socialism, where the air thickens with argument, cigarette smoke, and earnest conviction. When the brothers Ernest and Herbert Le Breton bring their friend Harry Oswald to observe, his privileged detachment becomes a lens through which Allen examines the genuine passion and the blind spots of revolutionary politics alike. The title is the provocation: Allen renames bourgeois England Philistia, applying the biblical term for cultural enemies to the materialistic middle classes who oppose social reform. What unfolds is both a vivid period portrait of late-Victorian radicalism and a sharp interrogation of what it means to fight for change while carrying the baggage of your own class.
