Peccavi

The Latin word peccavi means "I have sinned" - and that confession hangs over every page of this quiet, devastating novel. A clergyman stands at a funeral in the village of Long Stow, but the mourners do not yet know that the dead woman's return from presumed death has thrown his entire life into jeopardy. Years of peace, of reputation, of fragile domestic contentment, begin to crumble the moment Molly Musk steps back into the village she fled - only to die within days. E.W. Hornung, better known for his Raffles thief stories, reveals here a darker imagination. When Jasper Musk arrives seeking answers about his daughter's death, the rector must confront what he buried along with his conscience. The village's gossip and judgment become almost secondary to the internal tribunal the protagonist conducts against himself. Hornung writes with restraint about sin and its consequences, never melodramatic, always precise. For readers who savor quiet English novels about guilt, conscience, and the skeletons that survive even the most respectable lives.
