Our Friend the Charlatan

A sharp satirical novel about a young man who decides that charm is his only asset and marriage his only career. Dyce Lashmar, handsome and penniless, embarks on a calculated campaign to secure a wealthy wife, moving through the English countryside with smooth confidence and carefully rehearsed sincerity. But Gissing is too shrewd to write a simple morality tale. As Dyce's courtships unfold, the novel dissects the entire rotten machinery that makes such a calculation rational: the marriage market as a marketplace, the performance of respectability, and the way an entire class of people mistake money for virtue. His father, the struggling vicar Reverend Philip Lashmar, watches with mounting horror as his son transforms into something ghastly and effective - a charmer who has learned to mistake his own performance for feeling. This is Gissing at his most incisive, exposing the hollow ambitions and compromised ethics of late-Victorian England with forensic precision.
