Operation: Outer Space

Jed Cochrane has spent years in the fluorescent trenches of television production, another disposable cog in a corporate machine that treats human beings as interchangeable parts. Then, out of nowhere, he's tapped for a lunar mission. The orders come from a psychiatrist named William Holden, who needs Cochrane to help reach a troubled scientist stranded on the moon. It's the kind of absurd promotion that only makes sense if you're desperate, or if the rules of ordinary life no longer apply. But the moon is just the beginning. While Cochrane hurtles toward the gray wasteland, something far stranger arrives on Earth: an alien vessel, touching down at Boulder Lake Park with enough force to register on every seismograph on the planet. The creatures that emerge carry a paralyzing ray and a smell like wet reptile, and they have questions for humanity that no one knows how to answer. Suddenly the moon mission and the alien landing aren't separate mysteries at all. They're the same story, seen from opposite ends of the void. Murray Leinster wrote this in 1949, when space travel was still a fever dream and the Cold War made every unknown sky feel like a threat. What makes it endure is its weary, human protagonist thrown into the cosmic deep end, forced to find something like hope or purpose in a universe that has no particular reason to care whether he survives.
