Oldtown Folks

Oldtown Folks
Published in the 1870s, 'Oldtown Folks' is Harriet Beecher Stowe's seventh novel, drawing from her husband Rev. Calvin Stowe's childhood memories. Set in rural Massachusetts just after the American Revolution, it is one of the earliest examples of local color writing in New England. The narrator, young Horace Holyoke, recounts the complexities of life during the early Federalist years, including the tensions between emerging secular rationalism and traditional religious beliefs. The novel notably contributed to the decline of Calvinism during this period.
