Nuoren Wertherin kärsimykset (1774), originally titled Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, is an epistolary novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is a seminal work of the Sturm und Drang movement and significantly influenced later Romantic literature. The loosely autobiographical narrative explores the emotional turmoil of Werther, a young artist who falls in love with a woman engaged to another man, leading to tragic consequences. Goethe's work established him as one of the first literary celebrities of his time.
