My Musical Life

Walter Damrosch arrived in America as a boy from Breslau,携带 his father's musical legacy and a childhood haunted by war. This memoir traces one of American classical music's founding figures: the son of Leopold Damrosch, who built New York's musical culture from scratch, friend to Liszt and Wagner, founder of the Damrosch Opera Company that premiered works from Gotterdammerung to an opera based on The Scarlet Letter. But this is not merely a career retrospective. It is a deeply personal reckoning with displacement, loss of a sibling, and the particular burden of artistic inheritance. Damrosch writes with surprising candor about the loneliness of being the child of a demanding genius, the vertigo of meeting gods of music as a teenager, and the strange alchemy of turning European tradition into American ambition. For anyone curious about how classical music took root in New York, or about the intimate costs and rewards of a life devoted to art, this memoir offers both history and confession.
