My Doggie and I
In the muddy lanes of the Victorian countryside, a penniless medical student named John Mellon spots a scruffy, comical little dog and cannot walk past. He purchases the mangy creature from a rough man for a few shillings, naming him Dumps with affectionate irony. What follows is a tender account of an unlikely friendship between a young man with a generous heart and a dog of uncertain breeding but impeccable loyalty. As John trains to become a doctor, tending to the sick and impoverished of London's grimmest districts, Dumps remains his constant companion through foggy streets and humble lodgings. Ballantyne, better known for adventure novels like The Coral Island, here turns his attention to something quieter but equally powerful: the way love between species can anchor a person through hardship. The prose has the warm, unhurried quality of a fireside tale, and the relationship between John and Dumps carries genuine emotional weight. For readers who cherish stories of animal devotion set against the social realities of 19th-century England.
