Minor Poems of Michael Drayton

Among the finest sonnet sequences of the Elizabethan age, Michael Drayton's "Minor Poems" contains the radiant "Idea" sequence, sixty-three poems that rank alongside those of Sidney, Spenser, and Shakespeare. Here is a poet at the height of his powers, wrestling with love, beauty, and the relentless passage of time. Drayton's voice is distinct: muscular, philosophical, occasionally bitter, always precise. He writes of his mistress with a strange mixture of devotion and skepticism, celebrating her eyes, her worth, her cruelty. Beyond the sonnets, the collection offers odes and elegies that reveal Drayton's range, his capacity for lush description, for elegiac mourning, for sharp satirical observation. Born in Warwickshire, he was deeply invested in English history and identity, and these poems carry that national pride alongside their deeply personal confessions. For readers who treasure the Elizabethan sonnet tradition, this collection offers treasures: formal mastery, emotional complexity, and lines that have echoed through four centuries.
