Max Carrados

Max Carrados is the detective who sees what others miss, not despite his blindness, but because of it. Ernest Bramah created one of fiction's most inventive sleuths in 1914: a blind man whose extraordinary non-visual senses and methodical intellect make him invaluable to Scotland Yard and private clients alike. Through his loyal friend Carlyle, who serves as both narrator and eyes, Carrados tackles crimes that baffle the sighted. A potentially counterfeit ancient coin. A jewelry heist. A puzzling disappearance. What makes these stories endure isn't merely the novelty of a blind detective solving crimes, but Bramah's genuine cleverness. The puzzles are elegant, the deductions satisfying, and there's something quietly radical about a protagonist whose greatest asset is what he cannot see. George Orwell wrote that Max Carrados is 'the only detective stories since Poe that are worth re-reading.' That claim feels less hyperbolic with each case.
