Mary Louise
1916
When fifteen-year-old Mary Louise Burrows walks the halls of Miss Stearne's School for Girls, she carries a weight most girls her age shouldn't have to bear: rumors about her grandfather, the distinguished Colonel Weatherby, have begun to swirl, and the world seems determined to believe the worst. As her classmates turn suspicious and the school's new strict rules tighten around every student, Mary Louise must choose between keeping quiet to preserve her own social standing or standing firm in defense of a man she knows to be honorable. L. Frank Baum, better known for his Oz fantasies, delivers something surprising here: a warm, perceptive coming-of-age novel that treats its teenage heroine with genuine intelligence. The story pulses with the small dramas of adolescent life, friendship tested, loyalty questioned, the ache of being misunderstood, while weaving in larger questions about justice, integrity, and what it means to do right when doing right costs you everything. It's a book that understands how hard it is to be young and how profoundly unfair it feels when the adults fail to see the truth.
