Le Capitaine Pamphile
1839
Alexandre Dumas, years before he gave us the Musketeers, crafted this mischievous tale of a man who refuses to play by any rules but his own. Captain Pamphile is a rogue with the reflexes of a cat and the morals of a merchant ship at auction: whatever serves his purse, he takes. Told through a framing narrative in a Parisian artist's studio, the novel follows Pamphile's schemes across the high seas and back to civilization, each scheme more audacious than the last. A tortoise walks into a Paris shop in the opening pages, a comic counterpoint to the Englishman's doom that foreshadows the tangled fates Dumas loves to weave. This is Dumas unchained from historical gravity, using satire and adventure to dissect the money-grubbing hypocrisy of early 19th-century France. The wit is sharp, the plotting relentless. Readers who discovered Dumas through The Three Musketeers will find the same DNA here, just wilder and more playful.
