Thomas Carlyle was not interested in polite disagreement. In these 1850 pamphlets, he unleashes a ferocious attack on the spiritual bankruptcy of modern democracy, the hollow performances of reform, and a civilization that has mistaken noise for progress. Written in the aftermath of Europe's failed revolutions, this collection reads less like political theory and more like a prophet screaming from the wilderness. Carlyle opens with the image of civilization at the twelfth hour of night, old structures crumbling, new ones not yet born. He denounces the 'Reforming Pope' as a puppet of empty rhetoric, lambasts universal suffrage as rule by the mediocre, and pleads desperately for authentic leaders, 'Captains of Industry' who might pull humanity back from the abyss. The prose crackles with contempt and genuine terror: Carlyle believed modernity was not progress but decay, and he wrote with the urgency of a man witnessing the end of something. Whether you agree with him or not, Latter-Day Pamphlets remains a bracing, furious document of a mind refusing to look away from what he saw as the lie of his age.
