Janice Day at Poketown

When Janice Day steps off the lake steamer at Poketown, she's expecting adventure. Instead, she finds a town so quiet it seems to have forgotten how to be alive. Her uncle's farm is run-down, her relatives move through their days with listless despair, and even the lake seems to mirror the stagnation of the place. Yet Janice, with the stubborn optimism of a child who hasn't yet learned to be cynical, refuses to let Poketown swallow her spirit. She befriends the peculiar Mrs. Scattergood, her cousin Marty who embodies the town's weary resignation, and Lottie, a blind girl whose presence hints that connection can bloom in the unlikeliest places. What begins as a forced exile becomes a quiet test of resilience: can Janice hold onto herself while everyone around her has given up? This early 20th-century children's novel captures something true about childhood's particular loneliness, that ache of being somewhere that doesn't feel like home.
