Janice Day

Janice Day boards a steamer headed for Poketown, leaving behind the familiar streets of Greensboro for an uncertain future with relatives she's never met. Her father is in Mexico, dealing with business troubles that have sent his young daughter to live with her uncle's family in this small Eastern town. What she finds is a household that barely holds together - chaotic, dilapidated, and nothing like the orderly life she left behind. But Janice Day is not a girl who waits for adventure to find her. From the moment she steps off the boat and marvels at the strange beauty of her new home, she begins weaving herself into the fabric of Poketown, one bold interaction at a time. She meets Mrs. Scattergood, an elderly woman who becomes a crucial thread in the tapestry of her new life. This is a story about a girl who carries loneliness in one hand and determination in the other, and discovers that home isn't a place you find - it's something you build from whatever materials life gives you.
