British Literature, Novels

Charles Reade wrote this novel as a weapon. In 1856, British prisons were hellholes where minor offenders rotted in cells, subjected to silence rules, brutal warders, and systematic degradation. Reade embedded a young man in Durham Jail to witness the horrors firsthand, then transmuted that research into fiction so damning it helped change the law. The story cuts between two worlds: the pastoral anguish of George Fielding, a Berkshire farmer crushed by poverty and a cruel squire who covets his sweetheart Susanna Merton, and the gold fields of Australia where George flees to seek his fortune. When the squire conspires to have George framed and imprisoned, the novel's twin engines, romantic injustice and penal corruption, merge into a single indictment of a society that punishes the poor for being poor. It's both a cracking adventure and a moral tract, an early example of investigative fiction wielded as reform. Reade didn't just expose the system, he demanded you do something about it.
