Imaginary Portraits

Imaginary Portraits is a collection of fictional sketches by Walter Pater, first published in 1887. The stories focus on the lives of notable historical and fictional figures, exploring themes of beauty, perception, and the role of artists in society. The opening sketch, 'A Prince of Court Painters,' follows the journey of Antony Watteau from humble beginnings to the Parisian art scene, highlighting his artistic development and personal struggles.
