Hieroglyphic Tales

Horace Walpole published exactly six copies of these tales in 1785 and kept every one for himself, as if he knew the world wasn't ready. It wasn't. The mock preface claims these stories were written 'a little before the creation of the world' and preserved orally on an undiscovered island, and the claim feels less absurd the deeper you read. These are the first surrealist stories in English, though that word hadn't been invented yet. A princess debates philosophy with a giant emperor about names and history. A kingdom tears itself apart over the birthright of a princess who may never have existed. Walpole dismantles royal succession, cultural pompos, and the very act of storytelling itself, all while maintaining a straight face that makes the absurdity cut deeper. The humor is often funny, sometimes unsettling, always unexpected. For readers who believe the best fiction breaks rules rather than follows them, this is a glimpse of what English literature could do when it decided not to take itself seriously.
