Gabriel Lambert
1844
In 1835, Alexandre Dumas finds himself in Toulon, desperate to escape the distractions of the Mediterranean sun and finish writing a great drama. When he requests a boat from the port commandant, he gets more than he bargained for: a crew of convicts, including one whose face haunts him. Gabriel Lambert claims to be the Vicomte Henri de Faverne, but Dumas recognizes him from somewhere else entirely - a duel years ago, when a nobleman's reputation was called into question. The convict, kneeling, Extracts a desperate promise: ask nothing, and Dumas will learn the truth before he leaves. What follows is a seductive inquiry into the elasticity of identity, the performative nature of nobility, and whether a man can truly be separated from his past. Dumas, ever the romantic, renders this meeting with the gravity of a confession and the intrigue of a locked-room mystery. The novella builds toward a revelation that implicates not just Lambert's story, but Dumas's own assumptions about honor, class, and what it means to start over.
